Medical Insurance

Many insurances won't cover chiropractors. My chiro charges $27 per visit. The better quality one up the hill charges $50. The last time I went to Urgent care (which most insurances WILL pay for, it cost $150 and that was years ago. It's over $200 now. What would medical bills look like without price-inflating insurance and government programs? I bet they would be much more afordable.

Gout

My hubby was diagnosed with gout last week. This is his second attack.I have since done some research on how to treat this very painful condition.

First of all, this is a highly hereditary disease. If you have a relative with it you have a 25% or greater chance of developing it yourself. Hubby's father had it as do at least two of his brothers. So does my father, putting me at risk, except that only about 5% of gout patients are female.

Obesity is also a risk factor. Do NOT crash diet, however, as that will trigger an attack.

Gout is a symptom your kidneys aren't working quite right. In Hubby's case, he had Kidney stones a year ago, a gout attack last July, and another last week so I am looking especially hard at kidney health.

#1- Pray. Prayer works because that is how God set up the universe.

#2- Eliminate alcohol, sardines, anchovies, organ meats, and sweet peas from your diet. (Sadly this didn't help us much as we are tea-totalers [well, Coke Cola-totalers] and have never eaten any of the other foods except the peas.

Some resources say to leave off the sodas due to the high mineral content. Some say to drink them because they are high in alkaline content will nutralize the uric acid. Sodas just aren't good for you so I think you should limit them as much as possible (very hard to do in our society).

I know I read many years ago that diet/protein drinks (i.e. slim fast, ensure) cause kidney problems, but I can't find this information now. I would leave these concoctions off anyway. They are mostly oil and sugar, not exactly nutritionally sound "food."

#3-Eat more fruit and veggies. The information they sent home with him says "Vegitarians seldom have gout. Meat eaters who also eat a lot of fruit and veggies are at lower risk." So, I say it's the fruit and veggies that help to prevent it more than abstaining from meat. Both of those groups would eat little white flour or transfats. Anyway, moderation is always good.

#4- Did I mention Pray? It works.

#5- Certain things are known to help the body get rid of the uric acid that causes Gout.
  • Celery seed
  • Cherries (whole or juice)
  • Tumeric
  • Bromilain (found in pinapple and also very good for any kind of arthritis or inflamation)
You can get these four in the produce section of your store or you can buy them in capsule form seperatly or together in a product called "Go-Out." Take the Go-Out two capsules, 2-3x/day until the attack is gone and then one daily to keep Gout away.

#6- Additional herbs:
  • Milk Thistle (strengthens the Liver which releaves the pressure on the Kindnys allowing them to do their job of removing the Uric acid better)
  • Dandylion (helps the urinary tract function better)
  • Alfalfa (purifies and strengthens the blood in general)
  • Capsicum (makes all other herbs work better and helps the heart)
  • Fish oil (Omega 3s help the body get rid of impurities)
  • Calcium (reduces stress, actually, which will help inflammation)
  • Nettle leaf (Helps build cells and strengthen the blood which carries impurities out of the body.)
I hope this helps someone out there with gout:-)

My weight history

Like you all really care, lol.

I need to keep a record of this information and this seems like as good a place as any to store it, so feel free to skip this post. Or just go to the bottom to read my weight rants.

(1985) I weighed about 145 when I got married at 18yo. This is right about where the weight charts say I should be.

I took a nutrition class a few years later and in studying anorexia had a horrid revelation: I viewed my body and food the same way an anorexic does! Now, I never lost weight or totally quit eating due most likely to the excellent relationship I have with my parents. But it was disturbing to discover that I was so close to having such a dangerous attitude.

I quit dieting for the first time in my life.

I immediately gained 10 pounds.

For the first time in my life I could actually keep up with my (overweight) mother! I had energy, felt good, could concentrate...

Wow!

(1991) I weighed about 155 when I got pregnant with my first child. I gained 31 pounds during the pregnancy and lost all but 5 by my 6week post-partum appointment. (8.5lb baby)

(1994) By the time of my second pregnancy I weighed between 170 and 175. I gained 24 pounds and had lost 31(!) by my 6 week, putting me at about 165. (9.1lb baby)

I felt fantastic! Never better. Strong, even.

I had a miscarriage a year or so later.

(1998) By my fourth pregnancy I weighed 190 pounds, gained 31 pounds and weighed 190 by my 6 week. Felt good, if a bit "too big for the space." (8.12lb baby)

(1999) Preg #5, Full Term baby #4= 190-195 lbs, gained 31, 190-195 by 6 weeks PP. Felt good. (8.8lb baby)

(2001) Preg #6, Full Term baby #5= 190-195 lbs, gained 31, 190-195 by 6 weeks PP. Felt good. (9.2lb baby)

(2003) Preg #7, Full Term baby #6= 190-195 lbs, gained 31, 190-195 by 6 weeks PP. Felt good. (9.8lb baby)

(2004) Preg #8, Full Term baby #7= 190-195 lbs, gained 31, 190-195 by 6 weeks PP. Felt good. (10lb baby)

(Hmmm, see a pattern here?)

(2007) Preg #9, FT baby #8, I started at about 200 (approaching menopause which is often accompanied by a bit of weight gain.) gained between 31 and 36 lbs (midwife's scale and mine disagree.) Weighed 185 by 6 weeks.(!!!) (10.8lb baby)

I had three miscarriages between the birth of baby #8 and conception of baby #9.

(2011) Started this pregnancy at 200. I am now 38 (out of 40ish) weeks and have gained 28lbs. My arms look skinnier though, so I am thinking I may have lost weight while baby is gaining. It will be interesting to see what happens to my weight in the next couple of months. I will update.

Now the $64 question: If the charts show your "healthy weight" why didn't I feel best when I weighed what the charts say I should? Why did I feel my best at 20-30lbs heavier? Why has it been so easy to keep my weight at the same number through FIVE pregnancies? (Honestly, all the dieting I did was to eat smaller deserts if things started to get too close to 195lb)

Could it be that our concept of "healthy weight" is skewed? Could we be letting "experts that don't know us and don't really care about us as much as they care about their profits from weight lose products form our ideas of "healthy weights" instead of just paying attention to how our own bodies feel?

Yeah, I know. "Fat people have higher rates of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, etc" I will agree it is healthier to never get fat.

But what constitutes "fat" is, I believe, a different number for different people. For example, (to get really personal here) I am very small breasted (We're talking somewhere between a training bra and an A cup when I'm not pregnant or nursing. Why do you think I have so many kids? lol). This means I can carry an extra 5-10 pounds in my hips and thighs that a better endowed woman couldn't carry and still be considered a "healthy weight." Some of us have smaller bones, also (mine are medium according to scientific measures while my grandma's were small).

None of can control these features yet we deprive ourselves of nutrients to reach these artificially set goals. Fat people's cells test to be deficient in vitamins and nutrients. This is not healthy, so a doctor's and societies answer is to tell a fatty to eat LESS nutrients? What if nutrient deficiency is what causes them to retain weight? We may very well be shooting ourselves in the foot by dieting. The more we diet the more deficient we are. The more deficient we are the more our body wants to hold on to the weight we have in order to try to find the nutrients it needs. This is NOT healthy!

And I am not convinced that obesity CAUSES all those diseases. I believe that the same low-nutrient, Standard American Diet that causes obesity causes heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. I think it's correlation, NOT causation.

Now, skeletal problems such as bad feet, knees, hips, back are weight related, true. But I just don't see the evidence to support the idea that fat causes disease. It's just not there.

And dieting is unhealthy.

We don't even know if losing weight causes net health gains because not enough people can keep it off long enough to study!

We may (and probably are!) all depriving ourselves of needed nutrients, putting ourselves at greater risk for degenerative diseases in order to meet a standard that won't make us any healthier at all.

Again, Wow:-(

Maybe it's time we just started to live healthy (exercise, lots of veggies and whole grains, unprocessed meats and milk, lots of water, lots of rest, lower stress) and throw away our scales. What do you think?

‘Deselecting’ our children - The Globe and Mail

‘Deselecting’ our children - The Globe and Mail

You know a better way to get rid of all Downs Syndrome would be to just kill them after they are born. After all, the tests aren't always right either way, with both false positives and negatives. If we just wait until they are born to kill them we will be sure to only get the right ones.

If that thought disturbs you, so should aborting a baby because it's not perfect.

Honestly, I don't even get the tests anymore. If there is something "wrong" with my baby, I will love him and raise him anyway. Honestly, since I seem to only be able to birth human beings, all my babies have flaws, so what if this one isn't as smart or pretty? He would be better than the others in other ways.

If we continue to make it OK to kill a baby because he has Down's, how long before we kill anyone who isn't perfect due to a car accident, illness, or some other cause?

Once we start playing God, we are in very dangerous territory.

MP Anna Sobecka said killing a child because of the illegal actions of his or her father amounts to “executing a kind of death penalty on an innocent, unborn man.”

“The death penalty for criminals was abolished in the European Union as in-humanitarian, and it is still practiced for the innocent, the smallest, weakest children,” she lamented."

Debunking myths of America’s health care system - Opinion - The Daily Athenaeum - West Virginia University

ANY industry ANY government has gotten involved in at ANY time in history has seen skyrocketing prices and plummeting quality. There is no logical reason to think that American health care has been exempted from this.

put medical freedom into the Constitution

"Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution, the time will come when medicine will organize into an underground dictatorship... To restrict the art of healing to one class of men and deny equal privileges to others will constitute the Bastile of medical science. All such laws are un-American and dispotic and have no place in a republic..." Benjamin Rush

In a true fee society, we would have the choice between Md's, specialists, herbalists, accupuncture, chiropractor, homeopathy, and who know what else. What is right for one person isn't necessarily right someone else, even if they have the same illness. We must be free to choose.

Birth Control causes more babies.

The Family in America

"widespread use of contraception and the availability of abortion changes relationships between men and women in significant ways. These changes do not just affect the individuals who choose to use the technology. Contraceptive technology, imposed on the states by the Court and subsidized by Title X and Medicaid, changes the terms on which everyone participates in the dating and mating game, even if they decline to use the technology.

When sexual activity entails a high probability of pregnancy, society develops a set of cultural norms for inducing men to commit to women they impregnate. These norms, largely if informally enforced by women, include a strong social expectation that women will refuse sex outside of marriage. Women develop a set of socially acceptable ways to refuse sex, even with men they genuinely like. The norms also include the expectation that the man will marry a woman he impregnates. All these norms are designed to discourage casual encounters and encourage fathers to commit to mothers.

But when low-cost, highly effective contraception is introduced, distributed, and paid for by the federal government, these cultural norms no longer serve the same purpose and are likely to fade. A woman cannot so easily resist a man’s sexual advances on the grounds that she might get pregnant: the probability of pregnancy is lower. The man can make birth control and sex the price of being in a relationship with him. In many ways, the man has the upper hand; he can more easily find an alternative lover if she refuses. Even a woman who would be inclined to abstain from premarital relations will face increased pressure to be sexually permissive. The pressure comes not only from men but also indirectly from competition with other women."

Yep. That's what happened.

Only women can be mothers. Have we forgotten this fundamental?

E-Mail Newsletters

"Once a lady went to visit her friend. During the visit the children of the friend entered the room and began to play with each other. As the lady and her friend visited, the lady turned to her friend and said eagerly and yet with evidently no thought of the meaning of her words:

“Oh, I’d give my life to have such children.” The mother replied with a subdued earnestness whose quiet told of the depth of experience out of which her words came: “That’s exactly what it costs.”"

Basics of the Human Immune System Prior to Introduction of Vaccines: Are Vaccines Turning Our Children’s Immune Systems Inside Out? International Medical Council on Vaccination

"As to claims that vaccines have been the major factors in controlling infectious diseases of earlier times, according to the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, from 1911 to 1935 the four leading causes of childhood deaths from infectious diseases in the USA were diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), scarlet fever, and measles. Yet, by 1945 the combined death rates from these causes had declined by 95 percent before implementation of mass vaccine programs. [which occurred in the mid 40s] Other sources provided much the same information. Furthermore, according to a report in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, July 30, 1999, improvements in sanitation, water quality, hygiene, and the introduction of antibiotics have been the most important factors in control of infectious disease in the past century. Although vaccines were mentioned, they were not included among the major factors."

Emphasis mine.

If the rate of childhood diseases fell this dramatically BEFORE vaccines were introduced, it can't possibly be the vaccines that caused the fall.

Should Providers Refuse to Treat Overweight Pregnant Women?

Should Providers Refuse to Treat Overweight Pregnant Women? - The Unnecesarean -

Ummm, ok so what? These docs are telling their fat women to go homebirth???

A recent study found that there were actually no more complications in fat women than the skinny. The normal perception of greater problems is due to self fulfilling prophecies; the doctor expects problems so he is more likely to induce, continuous monitor, do frequent internal checks, and jump to c-section sooner all of which CAUSE more complications. If the docs would just shut up and sit still, most complications in woman of ALL sizes wouldn't happen in the first place and everyone would be happier.

Ron Paul Introduces Bill To Protect Raw Milk Sellers | Health Impact News

Ron Paul Introduces Bill To Protect Raw Milk Sellers Health Impact News

I've written about raw milk before. My research says it is healthier in most cases. This is part of the reason we now own a cow (though the fact that I like cows for pets is also a very big factor). Selling Raw milk is illegal in our state.

You know, not all humans are the same and what is right for one isn't necessarily right for others.

My dad is lactose (milk sugar) intolerent. He can't drink store milk or my cow's raw milk. He can drink lactose-free milk without a problem.

I have a friend (and had a child until she was nearly two) that is milk-protein intollerent. This friend cna't drink store milk without serious tummy troubles but she can drink my cows milk with no problem. My little one couldn't even eat cheese, yougurt, or butter without problems (and since mamma was nursing full time, momma couldn't either!) But she could drink raw wilk without any problems. When we butchered that cow, I had to put her on almond milk until she grew out of her allergy.

Why not just buy raw milk for her? As I said above, it's illegal in my state to sell it.

So the law makers have sentenced my friend and my child to no milk (how do you eat cold cereal?) or inferior milk substitutes.

How exactly is this consistent with our Constitution or with a "free" society?

It's time to take back our food.

An Obstetrician's Hope - The Unnecesarean -

Dear Dr. Hayes,

If you ever get tired of Doctors Without Borders, I know a nice little community here that really needs you!

This article is FULL of important information. This man has done his research and knows what he is talking about.

"The women who are increasingly asking for out of hospital care are doing so because they are informed, intelligent, and empowered women who are concerned about their health and the health of their baby."

"In my experience, no mother cares more about the “birth experience” than they do their baby. It is precisely because they care about their baby and their life that they are making the completely rational decision to avoid a hospital birth at all costs."

"There are many reasons we should encourage home deliveries attended by qualified birth attendants: it’s more comfortable and convenient; it’s less expensive; we should respect patient autonomy. But there is one reason why we cannot ethically avoid it — it is safer. The outcomes, for mothers and babies, are simply better." [Emphisis mine-BettySue]

"I have delivered several hundred VBACs [in homes, not the hospital] in the past several years without incident. In the same time frame, my local hospital has lost at least 3 mothers during or shortly following cesarean deliveries."

Exactly!!!

If you are or know ANYONE of childbearing age, read this letter!

Questions about Prenatal Ultrasound and the Alarming Increase in Autism - by Caroline Rodgers

Questions about Prenatal Ultrasound and the Alarming Increase in Autism - by Caroline Rodgers

This article completely dismisses the vaccine-autism connection. The studies "disproving" this link were flawed and have been discredited. And the vaccine companies promised to not make any more vaccines with thermosil in them but are actually still using their stores of the the old recipes. I think when you have a perfectly normal child who gets their shots and then suddenly is not normal, you MUST conclude the shots did SOMETHING. Now, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Autism has many causes including both vaccines and ultrasounds or a combination of both. Maybe the damage from the ultrasound makes Baby vulnerable to damage from the vaccines. Don't know.

I do know that the vast majority of the time sonograms are done for purely frivolous reasons:

To see what sex the baby is.

To see when he is really due (like that can really be predicted! Babies come within a couple of weeks of their "due date" no matter what "age" the sonogram says they are.)

To make sure everything is OK. Now, ultrasounds don't make the baby healthy; they see if baby is already healthy. If he isn't what do you do about it? You get an abortion is what you do. That didn't cure the baby, it killed him. This is not a compassionate way to treat the handicapped!

To increase bonding with the parents or to reassure them. If parents are left to God's nature, the hormones involved in natural, non-induced birth will insure plenty of bonding. And if baby has a good heartbeat (Doppler's are a type of sonogram with much lower levels of sound and heat, but should still not be used anymore than necessary. My midwife uses it during the first couple of months and during labor but uses a fetascope the rest of the time to limit exposure) or is kicking around he is healthy. That picture doesn't tell you anything new.

The one good thing about sonograms:

Because "everyone" gets them and shares Baby's first picture, younger people have grown up seeing that that "thing" in the womb is a real, live baby. This is why the younger voters are increasingly pro-life.

“If I were at home, I would have died” — The trouble with extrapolating hospital birth events to homebirth « erin ellis homebirth midwife

Most complications in the hospital are CAUSED by the hospital. Since homebirth is laking the causes, they lack the danger.

"The United States ranks 41st in maternal mortality among nations. That means in 40 other countries, women are less likely to die from pregnancy and birth related causes. The CDC also states that half of the reported deaths were preventable and that death rates are underreported by almost a third. On April 9th the Healthy Mothers Healthy Birth Summit will convene in Washington D.C. to examine the clinical and political issues surrounding maternal death in the United States."

Those countries with safer births than ours all use midwives more often than we do.

Don't Fix it if it isn't Broken

Why do we say "We got fixed" when what we really mean is "We had the doctor break a system that was functioning exactly how He designed it to?

I have been reading this book. It is the one that started the whole "Quiverfull" movement.

This book boils down to asking one question:

Is God really Lord of ALL your life?

I find that most Christians think He is but have a definite blind spot when choosing how many eternal souls (babies) they will allow God to bring into this world through them.

If you want to know why so many are now having larger than average families, why the Duggers are like they are, What the Bible says about babies, then read this book. The Hesses answer all the questions you would expect: overpopulation, finances, health, etc. that are given as reasons to limit family size.

I highly encourage EVERY Christian couple to read either "A Full Quiver," "Be Fruitful and Multiply," or "Children: Blessing or Burden?" You already know the anti-child, small-family side of the argument. At least find out the reasoning behind the other viewpoint.

Oh, and PRAY ABOUT IT!

If I accomplish nothing  else, If I get you to honestly seek God's will about the size of your family, I have succeeded.

Cesarean Rates by State, 2009 - The Unnecesarean -

How does your state rate? Mine, not so good:-( (We're tied for 16th). Remember that a c-section is MAJOR ABDOMINAL SURGERY! God really did know what He was doing when He designed the female body. The vast majority of women really can birth vaginally. Fully ONE THIRD of all babies born in America today come into the world through man's way instead of God's way. And the numbers are higher every year. The World Health Organization says no country should have a c-section rate higher than 10-15%. Many think this number is too high (most midwives run between 5 and 10%. Mine has a 3% c-section rate!:-). Too high of a number means too many women are being subjected to the unnecessary risks of surgery (yes, there are risks to c-sections.) It also means too many babies are being subjected to the meds necessary for surgery, certainly not good for them if their life isn't threatened (which it obviously isn't because the neo-natal death and injury rate isn't declining one twit as our c-section rate climbs. In fact, if anything it is getting higher.) (Now due to The FAll some c-sections really are necessary to save Baby or Mommy's lives. But these are really rare.) Cesarean Rates by State, 2009 - The Unnecesarean Risks of c-section: Infection: Infection can occur at the incision site, in the uterus and in other pelvic organs such as the bladder and is the second leading cause of maternal death. Hemorrhage or increased blood loss: There is more blood loss in a cesarean delivery than with a vaginal delivery. This can lead to anemia or a blood transfusion (1 to 6 women per 100 require a blood transfusion). Hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal death. Injury to organs: Possible injury to organs such as the bowel or bladder (2 per 1002). (This means the doctor accidently cuts the wrong thing!) Adhesions: Scar tissue may form inside the pelvic region causing blockage and pain. This can also lead to future pregnancy complication such as placenta previa or placental abruption which can cause hemorrhage. Extended hospital stay: After a cesarean, the normal time in the hospital is 3-5 days after giving birth if there are no complications. A few hours to 1 day is the norm for a vaginal birth. Extended recovery time: The amount of time needed for recovery after a cesarean can extend from weeks to months, having an impact on bonding time with your baby (1 in 14 report incisional pain six months or more after surgery4). Reactions to medications: There can be a negative reaction to the anesthesia given during a cesarean or reaction to pain medication given after the procedure. Risk of additional surgeries: Such as hysterectomy, bladder repair or another cesarean. Maternal mortality: The maternal mortality rate for a cesarean is four times greater than with a vaginal birth. Emotional reactions: Women who have a cesarean report feeling negatively about their birth experience. In fact one researcher discovered that "Post Partam Depression" has EXACTLY the same symptoms as "Post Tramatic Stress Syndromn" which is suffered by veterans and rape victims. She also discovered that the more medical interventions a woman has in a birth the more likely she is to suffer PPD (PTSS) with c-sections being the ultimate in interventions. Mom may also have trouble with initial bonding with their baby. Risks and Complications for the Baby: Premature birth: If gestational age was not calculated correctly, a baby delivered by cesarean could be delivered too early and be low birth weight. And doctors wonder why our premie rate has gone up along with the rate of c-sections. Breathing problems: When delivered by cesarean, a baby is more likely to have breathing and respiratory difficulties. Some studies show an increased need for assistance with breathing and immediate care after a cesarean than with a vaginal delivery. This is even more true when there is NO emergency but the c-section was entirely planned. Low APGAR scores: Low APGAR scores can be the result of anesthesia, fetal distress before the delivery or lack of stimulation during delivery (vaginal birth provides natural stimulation to the baby while in the birth canal). Babies born by cesarean are 50% more likely to have lower APGAR scores than those born vaginally. Fetal injury: Very rarely, the baby may be nicked or cut during the incision (1 to 2 babies per 100 will be cut during the surgery). Mother and unborn baby die after hospital staff ignore husband's pleas | News

This whole tragedy would not have happened if;

1)She had not been induced. Induction puts more stress on the system, especially old c-section scars, than natural labor. This is the number one mistake.

2)The staff had simply listened to her and her hubby and treated them with human respect. All too often those in the maternity ward (and dare I say the rest of the hospital?) are treated like less than humans.

Yesterday (8-31-10) I had the privilage of talking to an 89 year old doctor. He had much wisdom to impart and I had a good time. He is very disgusted with the medical profession right now. His observation is that they do what they do not to help people, but to make money. Sadly, I have seen that in following the logic of many types of treatment, too. Especially in birth.

How to Replace ObamaCare

Eagle Forum Blog: How to Replace ObamaCare

I sort of agree and sort of don't.

I don't support obamacare in any way, shape or form. I fail to see how putting everyone on Medicaid would be an improvement. And that is what will eventually come from obamacare. Why? This legislation requires everyone to buy insurance or pay a fine that is LESS than the cost of a years worth of insurance. Since no insurance will be allowed to deny you coverage should you actually get sick, most will choose to pay the fine. All the insurance companies will go broke since they will only have sick people paying in. The result will eventually be a single-payer system (which is the whole goal in the first place). Medicaid is exactly how that will look only more over crowded. Why anyone would think differently, I have no idea. If you look closely at the care in other countries, that is exactly what they have. With our gov's history, why would it be any different?

Now, does this mean I think our current medical system is great? Well, it's better than anyone else has, but it very badly broken.

What we should do to fix it:
1) Remove all government requirements and regulations on insurance companies (except of course punishing any company that doesn't keep their end of their contracts. (Thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not lie.)

2) End all Government involvement in health care (Medicare and Medicaid). Look at history. EVERY time ANY government gets involved in ANY industry the prices skyrocket and the quality plummets. Removing gove involvement will open the door for innovation and price cuts.

3) Institute a healthcare voucher system. Send every citizen and LEGAL immigrant a check for, say, $5000.00 that can be deposited into a healthcare savings account (Why would the elderly need poor quality Medicare when they hav ethe money to buy the same high quality care everyone else gets?). The only regulation would be that the receiver of the check must buy some sort of hospitalization coverage. They would be free to shop around to find the policy that would best meet their needs (hubby and I would look for maternity coverage, my elderly parents wouldn't, for example). Any more comprehensive coverage would be up to each individual. For hubby and I the money left in the account would be more than enough to cover our annual medical bills. We wouldn't seek any better coverage than hospital. My parents on the other hand, would probably look for something that would pay a wider range of bills. We would both shop around for the best deal with the most reliable companies.

4) Let the individuals contribute additional money to their accounts and cash out the leftovers at the end of the year. This would encourage price comparisons and trigger price wars among care providers. This is how capitalism works when unshackled by the government.

5) The legislation would include a reduction of 5% per year in the amount of the voucher until it no longer exists (An exception could be made for those born before 1965. Everyone else would have time to save some money up for their future.)

This plan would divorce health coverage from employment (a stupid idea in the first place.) It would drive prices down while forcing quality and innovation up. Most importantly, it would give each individual the freedom to buy what coverage they need, not some generic, cookie-cutter plan that doesn't fit them.

I really think this would be the best plan.

How Breastfeeding Benefits Mothers' Health: Scientific American

I "nursed" my oldest for a very short time and my second for six months. All my others have nursed for close to or more than a year. Some one near by who knew what was going on could have helped me to nurse my oldest for longer, but there was no one available. I couldn't go looking for help because my grandma was in thehospital dying at that moment. I just didn't have the emotional reserves to deal with hunting for help. My mom had similar problems and only nursed my brother and I for a very short time, also.

Do I regret putting her on the bottle? No. Don't get me wrong, I wish I could have continued to breastfeed. But I know that under the same circumstances with the same resources and knowledge, I would make the same choice today.

But I don't have the same resources and knowledge today. When my youngest (of 8) was a newbie we had some definit problems (she was "toungue-tied" OUCH!), but this time I had a ready knowledge base, a shelf full of reference books, and a midwife who knew and cared about our nursing experience. I had to tough it out for a few days, but I nursed her until after her first birthday.

My goal to to make that bank of information available to all women so fewer will find themselves in the same boat was in with my first.

(Oh and having done both bottle and nursing, I can tell you that nursing is WAY easier, erasing any possible benifits from having others help you feed baby, unless you work full time which is a whole different story.)

Watch Your Language- How we speak affects how we think.

Great article. I haven't read the rest of the site, but enjoyed this account of a Canadian woman breastfeeding in Mongolia.

God designed the breast for two purposes: keeping our hubbies’ attention and feeding our babies. Most of don’t need help with the first;-) The second, thanks to several generations of artificial breastmilk (formula) babies, is a little more difficult. Most of us never saw anyone breastfeed before we had our own babies and didn’t know you must hold the child different and do different things to breastfeed than to bottlefeed. It really is a learned skill, for both mom and baby.

My e-friend, Anna, has posted this list of things to help breastfeeding be successful. Enjoy:-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoIN7LcMANM

“Abstinence isn't the answer (to abortion)- and neither is birth control”

“Some Subtle Effects of the Birth Control Culture.” You might be surprised how much affect the pill has had.

“Is Birth Control the Church's Business?” How could the creation of eternal souls NOT be the church’s business?

That’s what I am saying…
“I've always found it interesting that women who do not generally practice birth control are the ones put in a class; "those people"..."those QF (quiverful) people". I find that odd. Women whose bodies are doing what they were created to do have to explain why they aren't taking a synthetic drug that alters its normal function? Does this not seem odd?...

Imagine a person walking up to you at the store and saying, "Oh my goodness! You're having s*x with your husband just for pleasure? You are purposely preventing conception? Only two children? Do you not want any more?"

How offensive! But... can I say this gently...that is more accurate than what so many who know the sting of being questioned about a larger than normal family is….

For centuries, couples have been pretty much having children every few years. Yeah people avoided certain times of the month, I'm sure, but the whole concept of just using birth control to stop after a child or two has been completely FOREIGN to the world until around the 1960's. So why is that group now the normal group, and the other group is "cultish" and weird?”

For the rest of the article…

Having said this, I don’t mind questions such as “are they all yours.” I find most people really want to tell me about their families. Now “Are you going to have more?” depends on who is asking. I have had that question from those who really wanted to know, maybe considering the issue in their own lives. I don’t mind them at all. Those with a condemning tone of voice though…

Another post on birth control.

This article makes the observation that most birth control methods are made for the woman’s use and have mild to fatal complications (the pill causes breast cancer and heart disease. Abortion causes both also. IUD can cause the above plus uterine abruption). None of the men’s birth control methods have side effects. This is equality???? Doesn’t this just allow men to use women for their own entertainment?

In no other area do healthy women have surgeries and take pills. Children are evidently a disease. What ever happened to children being the blessing God says they are?

What is the purpose of birth control (including abortion)? For 99.99% of the time the purpose is to allow women to screw around without consequences and men to use any one they want without leaving troublesome “evidence” (the kind that needs its diaper changed occasionally).

I think sex (which was God’s idea by the way) is too wonderful and beautiful and (ok, I’ll say it) fun to degrade it this way. It is not just cheap entertainment. It is a symbol of God’s relationship with the church; of how close He wants to be to His bride. And just like that spiritual relationship, sex should be open to fruitfulness. It should be reserved for just the one special person God has given you. Sex is God’s wedding gift to you. Enjoy it!

More and more Christians are reconsidering the whole birth control attitude of our country. Here is one discussion.

A set of links about Birth control from LAF
Appetites for big houses growing while families are shrinking.

Basically what this boils down to is your definition of abortion. Most doctors are taught that an abortion is a procedure done AFTER the embryo implants in the uterus. Thus, anything that causes the embryo to not implant is not an Abortifacient. Most conservative Christians believe that life begins at conception (three to ten days before implantation) and so anything that prevents implantation IS an Abortifacient.

The pill prevents ovulation 65% of the time. This means that no egg is ripened and released so no baby is possible.

30% of the time the pill makes the woman’s body hostile to sperm so none live long enough to fertilize the egg that is released. Again, no baby.

1% of the time an egg is fertilized and implants causing a pregnancy.

This leaves 4% unaccounted for. Read the package insert in pills. 4% of the time they make the uterus inhospitable to a fertilized embryo (Baby). The new life can’t implant and “passes into the hands of the Lord” to borrow the way an e-friend words it.

All hormonal controls function in the same way, just with different numbers.

Don’t take my words for it. Read this article. Pray. Research. This is too important of an issue to leave in the hands of others.

(Just to be completely truthful, I used the pill myself for four years. I was taught in sex ed that the pill simply keeps you from ovulating so there was no moral question about it. I quit after four years because I knew there was a link between blood clots and the pill if you use it longer.

Since then I have not only learned of the abortion/pill link, but as posted earlier, the breast cancer/pill and heart disease/pill links.

I have also come to question our society’s whole attitude towards children and birth control (I am not saying all birth control is wrong, but that is another post:-) to quote another e-friend;

“The Bible calls debt a curse and children a blessing yet we apply for the curse and take drugs and have surgeries to prevent the blessings.”

“A new study from the Mayo Clinic has concluded that there is ‘a measurable and statistically significant’ connection between the pill and pre-menopausal breast cancer,”

Makes since. If God wanted us to have extra hormones in our system, He would have put them their.

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Proverbs 14:12 and Proverbs 16:25

I am more and more convinced that the more we get away from how God originally made things the worse things become. This is just one example. We invented a little pill you can take so you can still have sex and not “risk” the curse of children. The result- you have a greater chance of breast cancer. Refuse life, you get death.

The sad thing is that God has provided a way to control the spacing of pregnancy without chemicals and devices and surgeries. It is based on the idea that you can’t get pregnant if you are not fertile and women are only fertile three to ten days per month. (My article)

But this requires self control, communication and doesn’t bring any money into anyone’s pocket like pills and procedures do. So no one talks about it. The sad thing is, they aren’t talking about this newly discovered breast cancer risk either.

An article about chemical pollution and the pill. Interesting.

Good questions. Why is it evil for this man to have cut the spinal columns of of a baby when it was OK for him to rip their legs and arms and heads off 10 minutes earlier? This simply doesn't make sense.

We as a society need to decide if human life is valuable or not. If it isn't, not only is abortion OK but so is murder and slavery. If Life is valuable, abortion at any time after conception must end.

There is no other area in life where one person is FORCED (whether physically or through coercion) to have surgery for another human being. ("Hey Mrs. Jones, we the police have come to take you to the hospital to give a kidney to your neighbor whether you want to or not." Ridiculous) I would also probably add a clause stating that abortion would be allowed if the continuation of the pregnancy would directly cause the physical death of the mom (as in the case of a tubal pregnancy). This is just self defense and it is allowable in all states and even the Bible to kill in self defense.

One of the most insidious aspects of the abortion controversy has been the success of the feminist movement in presenting abortion on demand as a matter central to the liberation of women. As far back as the '70s, at least some feminists saw through this logic, but not nearly enough.

Richard Stith now argues that the legalization of abortion "was supposed to grant enormous freedom to women, but it has had the perverse result of freeing men and trapping women."

He continues: "Prior to the legalization of abortion in the United States, it was commonly understood that a man should offer a woman marriage in case of pregnancy, and many did so. Though with the legalization of abortion, men started to feel that they were not responsible for the birth of children and consequently not under any obligation to marry. In gaining the option of abortion, many women have lost the option of marriage."

Why do so many women miss this truth?"

This a very thought provoking article. I knew a woman who had three abortions. The first two were because her boyfriend wasn't ready to be a daddy yet. The third because she wanted to leave her husband and go back to her boyfriend unhendered. Very sad.

The inevitable change of the abortion debate.
The whole debate is between those that think every life is precious and those who think humans are no more than animals and are just as expendable.

A Twelve Year Old Speaks Out Against Abortion
Dead babies who don't count: The Pill's bloody future...

Abortion is such an emotional issue. It is like some believe that if abortion is not legal they are in slavery. The truth is that you don’t need an abortion at all if you obey the biblical commands to chastity outside of marriage. Yes, yes. I know the common question “What about rape, incest, danger to the mother, and deformed fetus?” Here is the answer:

1) Men who rape women should be executed as the Bible says. There would be far fewer rapes if men knew for sure they would die. Pregnancy from rape only happens one time in a thousand. Even then, many women who have had abortions after rapes have declared that the abortion was MORE traumatic than the rape. They were far more damaged by the abortion.

The baby created by a rape did not commit a crime. He is just as innocent as the mother. He does not deserve the death penalty just because of the crime his father committed. There is a couple out there somewhere who desperately want that child, too, if the mother is not in a position to raise him.

2) Incest is the same thing as rape. An under aged child can not give consent. So, whether she is related to the father of the baby or not, it is rape.

3) The chances of true danger to the mother are so rare that when abortion supporters wanted women to testify against the Partial-Birth Abortion ban, they had to find women to lie about the danger they were in. We should not legalize something for the sake of a percentage of a percentage of people. That can be dealt with in exception.

4) Deformed fetus- I dare you to go up to any handicapped person and ask if they wish their mother had aborted them. Humans deserve to live, have the Right to Life, whether they are perfect or not. Even an imperfect human is created in the Image of God.

“Should he have been aborted?” This is a commercial that was designed to air during the Super Bowl. The committee in charge of such things refused it. It shows a sonogram of a baby from a poor family and simply asks the question if this child should be aborted. Please watch this.

Botched Abortions: Why They Matter & What They Tell Us

“Eight Responses to the Pro-Choice Mindset” A series of arguments to use with those who believe it is ok to kill babies.

“Lessons from the past” Pro-lifers in the 19th century overcame staggering abortion rates and saved lives; here’s how they did it. (Yes, abortion existed in the 1800’s. It was not believed a baby was alive until mommy felt movement before x-rays were invented. This article tells of the successful strategies used to rescue women from this horrifying procedure.)

Abortion In the Case of Rape- Not a good idea.

This is a shocking video. Everyone needs to see it to understand how God sees abortion.

As Mr. Spock always said, "There are always options." If you find yourself pregnant and need help, go to the closest church, or even contact me. We will find you the help you need.

Don't kill your baby.

During the election, my yahoo groups discussed this subject. There were two common answers:

“We must elect antiabortion officials.”

And

“No, No. We must work with those in poverty and give them other options.”

Excuse me? These are not mutually exclusive. Fact is, we need to do BOTH and more.

If we Christians truly want to end the whole-sale slaughter of babies we must:

  • Help the poor.
  • Work in crisis pregnancy clinics.
  • Peacefully protest at abortion clinics.
  • Spread the word about what abortion, partial birth abortion, and “post birth” abortion really are.
  • Campaign for anti-abortion politicians.
  • Vote for anti-abortion politicians.
  • Quit treating children in our own lives as if they are expensive pets instead of human beings.
  • Begin to view ALL children in ALL circumstances as BLESSINGS FROM God!
  • Pray, Pray, Pray;
    • For God’s forgiveness for this atrocity.
    • For His guidance on how to stop it.
We CAN end this horrible procedure. But we must be willing to really fight it with love, our time, our money and a lot of boldness.

“Abortion leaves one wounded and one dead.”

Call yourself pro-life? read this. Watch both videos. Then let’s see if you really are pro-life.

Those with weak stomachs who should use discretion when reading this.

What would you say if I told you three candidates (that is HALF) think it is ok for one segment of society to have the legal right to burn a member of a certain demographic group to death with acid? Or cut that group’s arms and legs off and sell them to research companies? Cut a main artery and watch them bleed to death? Stick sharp objects into the base of their skulls and twist until they die? Lock them in a room without food, water, or even oxygen or heat until they die? It is the truth! How about telling someone who thinks these actions are horrible that they either HELP them or loose their jobs, maybe face prosecution? How about making YOU pay for such atrocities?

Early abortions involve either burning the baby to death with acid in his mother’s womb or cutting off his limbs and head, while he screams and tries to run away (and behaves in everyway like you would if someone was trying to cut YOUR arms off! We have videos.)

A “partial-birth abortion” involves delivering all but the head of a (often viable- able to live without mamma) baby, then either cutting the umbilical cord and allowing him to bleed to death or the above described procedure with the scissors.

The “Born alive act” some states have tried to pass would require doctors to save the lives of children who survive an abortion alive. Without this act, the baby is often tossed in a corner and allowed to die of hunger, thirst, cold or oxygen deprivation. This is baby killing plain and simple!

And if you work in the health care industry, you have NO RIGHT to be anti-abortion. If you dare to refuse to participate in any of these horrid acts, you can loose your job, and in some states, risk prosecution for disobeying the law.

One of these three candidates even opposes women being told the negative side-affects of abortion on her own body and the developmental stage of the baby. Nor does he think parents should have a right to know if their child wants one of these dangerous procedures. And he thinks YOU should pay for them anytime, anywhere, any reason.

NO, this is in NO WAY neutral! Some issues shouldn’t be. Like slavery. Genocide. Rape. Murder. Evil is evil.

Should we be one issue voters? If had told you that the candidate who wanted these awful things legal was a white man and it was black women, not babies, that were the target, wouldn’t this suddenly become a one-issue race? Wouldn’t we all band together to save the lives of our fellow human beings and TAR AND FEATHER this evil person? Why is a baby’s life worth any less?

And lastly, but most importantly, all good things come from God. Will God bless ANY country that thinks it is ok to cut babies heads off? It doesn’t matter how good anyone’s economics are, God WILL NOT BLESS NOR PROTECT a people who sacrifice HIS babies on the alter of SELFISHNESS and convenience.

How Can They Value Puppies Over Unborn Babies?
I have often wondered this.

Sonograms and abortion. How come women are supposed to be strong and capable but when they go to an abortion clinic, they are suddenly too weak to handle the truth of a sonogram?

Some women are getting abortions after ifp treatments. This means they are going to the trouble to be artificially inseminated and then killing the baby. http://www.albertmohler.com/2010/06/09/after-ivf-abortion-what-does-this-say/
